How do day and night rates work?

If you have a day/night meter, you’ll be charged different electricity rates during the day and night.

If you have a day/night meter (also called a time-of-day meter or a NightSaver meter), your meter will record day and night time usage separately. This means you can take advantage of a lower electricity rate during night hours.

Night‑rate hours

Customers with a day and night meter are charged a reduced night rate during the following times:

  • Winter: 11pm to 8am (late October to late March)
  • Summer: 12am to 9am (late March to late October)

How this appears on your bill

Your bill shows the two rates clearly in the breakdown:

  • Day units for daytime usage
  • Night units for night‑time usage

Smart day, night and peak rates

Please note that day/night meters are different to smart time-of-use plans.

Smart plans include different unit rates depending on when you use your electricity. All smart plans include Day, Night and Peak unit rates, rather than just day and night pricing.
