Bord Gáis Energy completes the acquisition of leading Irish solar PV installer, Swyft Energy

Deal will deliver 10,000 Solar Installations over the next 5 years

13th January 2024

Bord Gáis Energy today announced the completion of the acquisition of Swyft Energy, a solar PV provider in Ireland following approval from the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC). Bord Gáis Energy already operates in the solar PV market: directly to residential customers, and through its partnership with Irish Farmers’ Association delivering solar PV to farms across Ireland, helping farmers transition to green energy.

The acquisition of Swyft Energy now brings deeper solar PV capability to residential as well as business and farming customers of Bord Gáis Energy, as the company transitions to a green energy business.

Swyft Energy, a technology-led solar PV and boiler installation company, brings over six years of experience in delivering customer-focused solutions using a digital-first platform. This acquisition enhances Bord Gáis Energy’s highly skilled workforce and strengthens its customer proposition. With a target of 10,000 installations over the next 5 years, this will allow Bord Gáis Energy to compete better for the growing demand for solar energy in residential, commercial and agricultural sectors. Customers can save an average of 50-70% on their electricity bills with the installation of rooftop solar panels.

The transaction delivers robust standalone returns aligned to Bord Gáis Energy and Centrica’s capital allocation framework and creates future optionality around customer-focused energy transition installations.

Bord Gáis Energy is committed to achieving net zero by 2045, and to helping its customers reach net zero by 2050, working with over 730,000 residential, commercial and agricultural customers to help them become more energy efficient and move to renewable energy solutions. Bord Gáis Energy is targeting 10,000 solar installations over the next five years.

Teresa Purtill, Services and Solutions Director, Bord Gáis Energy said:

“The completion of the acquisition of Swyft Energy by Bord Gáis Energy following approval by the CCPC marks an exciting milestone as we work to energise a greener, fairer future. We know that solar power will play an integral role in achieving this and I’m delighted that we have brought Swyft Energy into the Bord Gáis Energy family allowing us to build further on our solar power energy offering.

We can now begin the important work of delivering on our target of 10,000 solar installations across the country by 2030, helping more customers enjoy the benefits of solar energy while supporting the government's Climate Action Plan targets.”

Adrian Casey, Co-Founder of Swyft Energy added:

“With the acquisition now completed, we’re excited to officially join forces with Bord Gáis Energy and realise the potential of our combined expertise. By integrating our innovative technology platform and dedicated team with the trusted Bord Gáis Energy brand, we’ll be able to scale our operations, bringing the benefits of solar to even more homes and businesses across Ireland. As demand for solar soars, our acquisition puts us in a strong position to meet it.”
