Why is my bill higher since I had a new meter fitted?

Meter replacements may increase bills due to accurate readings or adjustments from estimated usage.

Some customers notice an increase in their bills following a meter replacement. This increase can be driven by either or both of the following factors:

Meter replacement following long-term-no-access

If ESB Networks or Gas Networks Ireland are unable to access your meter for an extended period, you'll receive bills based on estimated readings. If your meter is replaced, an actual read will be taken from your old meter as it's being removed. If the actual read is higher than had been estimated, the balance will be reflected on your next bill.

Faulty legacy meter

Occasionally meters become defective due to damage or old age, and fail to record usage correctly. When a defective meter is replaced you may see an increase in the usage recorded on your bill, even though your usage has remained the same. This is because the new meter is recording your usage more accurately.
