Information about smart plans

Once your smart meter has been installed by ESB Networks, you can sign up to a smart plan. Signing up to a smart plan gives you the flexibility to use your electricity at times when it costs you less. Smart plans include different unit rates depending on when you use your electricity. All tariffs include Day, Night and Peak unit rates.

The below table is an example* of when the different time-bands for day, night and peak apply:

View and compare our smart plans (use the filters to select smart meter plans), or you can find a plan matched to your needs using our Find a Plan tool.

For more detail information on the day, night and peak unit rates that apply to each tariff – visit Our tariffs explained page and scroll down to the smart section.

Please note:

  • Level Pay is not available for smart plans. If you're paying your bills through Level Pay and switch to a smart plan, your Level Pay agreement will end and your total balance will be calculated and included in your first smart bill. If any balance is owed, this will be collected in full in your next direct debit payment.
  • If you've recently had your smart meter installed, it can take up to 30 days to establish the connectivity of your smart meter. You can sign up for a Smart Standard plan (this plan does not rely on half-hourly readings) as soon as your new smart meter is installed. Once 30 days have passed, you’ll be able to sign up to a wider range of smart plans.

New customers

If you wish to become a Bord Gáis Energy customer and sign up to a smart plan, you must switch to us first on a 'non-smart' plan. Once you've successfully switched to us, you can sign up to a smart plan. You can sign up to a 'non-smart' plan by viewing our Compare our plans page
