What happens if my emergency credit runs out?

Electricity 

If the credit on your meter runs low, you’ll be offered €20 emergency credit. If you use all your emergency credit, you'll need to top up by at least €25 to use it again. Click here to top up online.

If your emergency credit runs out during the week after 4pm (or 5pm during summertime), the supply will not go off until 9am the following day (or 10 am during summertime). This will give you enough time to top up your meter. 

If your emergency credit runs out after 4pm on a Friday, your supply will not be turned off until 9am (or 10am during summertime) the following Monday or Tuesday on a bank holiday. Your supply will also not be turned off on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, St. Stephen’s Day, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day or St. Patrick’s Day. This extra time to purchase more electricity is called friendly credit. 

If your electricity has been switched off, it will come back on straight away once you top up online.

Please note: if there’s any outstanding balance on your meter, your full top-up will go towards clearing that amount first. To restore power and continue using electricity, your next top-up will need to cover the total of any emergency and friendly credit you've used.

Gas 

If the credit on your meter runs low, you’ll be offered €20 emergency credit. The next time you top up, 45% of your top up will be used against the emergency credit. For example, if you used €20 emergency credit and then top up by €10, €4.50 will be used to repay the emergency credit. 

If your emergency credit runs out, your gas supply will be switched off until you top up again.  

If your gas supply has been switched off, visit a Payzone outlet to buy credit. Once you've inserted your card into the meter and the credit is accepted, your gas supply will automatically resume.

We advise customers to keep their meter topped up with credit to avoid the possibility of running out of gas at an inconvenient time.
